Next year, Nike will release Air Foamposite Pro ‘Dark Obsidian’

The cancellation of “Kobe Bryant,” “Allen Iverson” Zoom Flight 96 Editions

Were you hoping to wear your affinity for Allen Iverson on your Nike sneakers? Consider those dreams officially dashed. The so-called Allen Iverson Zoom Flight 96 has been canceled.

Previously, the cult classic Nike Air Zoom Flight 96 basketball model was set to launch in a series of brand new colorways, each unofficially celebrating members of the NBA Draft class of 1996, the year the nike free run 3.o shoe debuted. The homages would be ambiguous, vague: team colors and jersey-numbers would be used, sure, but nothing official, like a name or likeness. And yes, there would be a blue-and-red edition with the number 3 on the back, a subtle shout-out to Allen Iverson, who just happens to have a lifetime deal with Reebok. Well, no longer.

Nike has officially scrapped the idea, announcing that the unofficial Iverson and Kobe Bryant homages will not see the light of (retail) day. “Nike has made a business decision to not move forward with the nike free run 3 v3 shoe in the red/blue and white/purple colorways,” Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said in an email to the Associated Press. “However, two colorways inspired by the original 1996 colorways will still be available for purchase.”

Those two carbon fiber-laden originals will likely hit stores November 26. It’s still a week away, but it’s closer than never. If you’re dying for a pair, it’s crazy what you can find on eBay these days.
